Community Letter from the Pit River Nation: We Are Excited About the Future of New Sáttítla Highlands National Monument
The Pit River Nation issued the following community letter in response to the recent designation of Sáttítla Highlands National Monument.
Dear family, friends, business leaders, elected officials, and partners -
We are thrilled to expand on some exciting news you have likely seen or heard: Sáttítla Highlands is now officially a national monument! The Pit River Nation leadership would like to thank the local community for their strong support and tireless work and advocacy for this Tribally led initiative which resulted in President Biden designating over 224,000 acres of sacred lands for permanent protection. This momentous decision ensures the long-term preservation of cultural sites, our critical water resources, hunting and angling opportunities, while also preventing industrial development that could have threatened this treasured landscape and the wildlife that call it home.
This designation is a direct result of the widespread support from people like you—local businesses, organizations, and community leaders who recognize the importance of protecting the lands that define our region’s natural beauty and economic vitality. Your voice mattered, and this achievement belongs to all of us.
With the designation now in place, the work to shape the future of Sáttítla Highlands National Monument is just beginning. The U.S. Forest Service, in collaboration with the Pit River Tribe, will soon begin the process of developing a monument management plan — a roadmap for how these lands will be stewarded for the next generation. This process will provide opportunities for community members, local businesses, outdoor enthusiasts, and others, to join us in shaping the future of the monument through public input.
